What IS a cookie?

Cookies are small files, which your web browser stores on your computer. Cookies help a website identify that you have visited before. This is useful to remember any settings you may have chosen on a particular website. Website owners also use cookies to see how many visits their site is getting, and which pages are most popular. The information stored is very unlikely to be anything personal or sensitive. The vast majority of ways in which cookies are used is to benefit your user experience, but the new law acknowledges that users should be informed to make a choice. You may decide you feel uncomfortable knowing that websites are using even non-personal information to identify you. If this is the case, you can disable cookies in your browser for all websites.
